ABCD skin test

With the ABCD test, anyone can even control liver spots and birthmarks to detect changes that indicate skin cancer at an early stage.
With the ABCD rule, you can even detect noticeable pigmentation marks. Changes should be presented to a dermatologist.

A melanoma, as black skin cancer is medically described, is produced in more than half of all cases from existing pigment spots such as liver spots or birthmarks - sometimes only after decades. Early recognized, the cure for melanoma is very good compared to other cancers . That's why it's so important to keep an eye on liver spots and moles, look for new suspicious spots, and respond immediately to changes. Once a month , experts suggest, the skin should be checked for changes with a self-examination.

Self-examination of the skin for cancer prevention

Good light conditions are a prerequisite so that no suspicious spots are overlooked. The self-check should therefore be done in a bright room - and not under time pressure. Then the procedure is systematic: piece by piece the skin is examined from head to toe and scanned for suspicious pigment marks and liver spots. Not directly visible skin, for example, on the back, can best be inspected with the help of a hand mirror.
It is even better if one is supported by the partner or another related person. Even hidden skin areas such as toe gaps or hairy body parts should not be left out.

ABCD Rule: You should pay attention to liver spots

When self-examining the skin, the following criteria are to be noted:
  • A stands for asymmetry
  • B for limitation
  • C for color (color)
  • D for diameter.
The background is that a liver spot, from which a skin tumor (malignant melanoma) develops, changes size, color and / or shape depending on the type of melanoma.
Suspicious are pigment marks with non-symmetrical shape, with not clearly defined, but uneven and fringed edges and very dark color (black or dark brown to bluish).
Pigment-free spots, which appear gray to skin-colored, deserve a great deal of attention, as melanomas are rarely pigmented in rare cases. Finally, the diameter should be considered: If it is larger than two millimeters or it increases, this is like all other skin changes mentioned a reason to seek immediate dermatologist.

Use skin cancer screening

Even without any noticeable changes, over 35-year-olds should plan the course for skin cancer screening every two years. It is taken over by the statutory health insurance.
